Demand and conversion
Numbers that rise without anything else improving — followers, impressions, likes — and which, when bought, actively damage the account that carries them.
Also called Bought followers · Накрутка
A metric earns its place if a change in it predicts a change in revenue, and if a decision would differ depending on its value. Follower count fails both tests for almost every business, which is why it is the number most often reported and least often acted on.
Buying it is worse than useless, and the mechanism is specific rather than moral. Social platforms rank content by early engagement rate — interactions divided by the audience reached — so adding an audience that never interacts lowers the ratio on everything published afterwards. The account does not stand still; its organic reach falls, and it keeps falling for as long as the inert audience remains. Bought engagement compounds the same effect and adds a second: the platform's own systems detect coordinated behaviour and apply their own limits.
There is a commercial cost beyond reach. Advertising audiences built from followers or engagement inherit the fake ones, so lookalike models are trained on accounts that will never buy and the money goes to finding more of them. And the deception is cheap to detect — follower-to-engagement ratios are public, and a due-diligence process, a serious partner or a competitor will read them in minutes.
The same logic covers paid links and other purchased signals: they buy a number that a system is designed to detect, and the correction usually arrives after the supplier who sold them is gone.
Impressions and followers describe how many people were exposed to something, not how many wanted it. A campaign judged on reach optimises for the cheapest possible attention, which is by definition the least interested. Report the number of people who did the next thing, whatever that is, and keep reach as a diagnostic rather than a result.
The definitions are the easy part. Whether the figure on your dashboard was computed this way is a different question, and usually the more expensive one.
